Ohio History

After the American Revolution Ohio became a part of the Northwest region. On March 1, 1803 Ohio became the 17th state. The first people to discover the land was the Native Americans. For centuries mound builders lived in Ohio around the time the pyramids were built. Around 1812 Columbus, the capital of Ohio, was founded. The state takes its name from the Ohio river who's name originated from the word Ohiyo meaning "good river". Annie Oakley and the right brothers both grew up in Ohio. Annie Oakley was a wild west performer and the most famous American sharp shooter in american history. You should know the writ brothers but if not they are the first people to invent and fly the airplane, they made aviation history. Did you know the buck-eye state (Ohio) gets its name from a common tree in Ohio called a buck-eye. The nuts in the tree looks like a deer eye (a buck is a male deer).
